Located two minutes away from York Station is the five star hotel The Grand. Offering views of the city walls and next door to the Sora Sky Bar, this award winning afternoon tea was the perfect choice for celebrating finishing university with my parents. Just a year and a half later than expected. We opted for the champagne afternoon tea, due to the special occasion, and it didn’t disappoint.
With unlimited hot drinks, a glass of champagne and yummy afternoon tea, what could be a better way to spend me achieving a 2:1?
The hostess seated us and took our hot drinks order and then we were off. We felt very swish and fancy, especially with champagne in hand too. This specific afternoon tea cost £39.95 per person, the standard afternoon tea costs £29.95.both come with a 12.5% service charge too. The food was delicious but the service could have been a tad better considering the hotel’s reputation. Don’t let that put you off going and having a fancy afternoon though. I chose a hot chocolate, odd I know, but it did go really well with the afternoon tea.
The sandwiches were absolutely lovely. We overheard one of the waitresses saying the chef changed to the autumnal menu, just two hours before we were seated! The best sandwich had to be the roast chicken caesar, it was lush. We swapped the sausage roll to the veggie option and I’m so glad we did. Imagine Christmas dinner but in a sausage roll, ha! It was immense.
The scones were amazing too. I have to say, the food was absolutely delicious. We couldn’t fault it. We just felt really full when it got to the third plate, oops. Now the dessert plate was really really good. Like I mentioned I was starting to feel that level of ‘full’ when even the thought of eating another sweet treat was off putting. Fear not, I powered through. My favourite sweet was the Tropical ‘Magnum’ even though it tasted like a Solero ice cream!
Overall, it was a lovely day. We visited the new Malmaison hotel next door and had a couple of drinks before heading home. I would recommend booking the afternoon tea for 1:15pm to 1:30pm as that was the quieter time to start the experience. It started to get busier after that time. Don’t worry you have your table for an hour and a bit.
if you’re looking for another afternoon tea to experience which is a tad cheaper too, try Bella Italia’s.
