Tourist Must Stops to Visit This Christmas in York

Tourists rejoice! I’ve scoured York for my favourite festive novelty and tourist hotspots so you don’t have to. York has the best places to grab a unique Instagram snap and some Christmas presents so you can get ahead of the game.

Welcome to York at Christmas.

Stonegate Teddy Bears, Stonegate

Founded in 1895 by the Scott family, Stonegate Teddy Bears offers primarily a range of collectable bears alongside other novelty items. Accompanied by a large bear outside the shop door, it’s a must visit for an Instagram opportunity. I think most residents and tourists forget about this little treasure of a shop but still prep for queues like most places in the centre of York. After your visit, you can always pop outside for an iconic Instagram snap with the big bear I mentioned before. Can you believe I’ve lived in York for my whole adult life and I’ve never had a photo with this bear until this year?

Käthe Wohlfahrt, Stonegate

Stonegate is also home to Christmas all year round, quite literally. Fun fact, this shop featured in one of my first published news stories when I was doing my degree. The only downside to this shop is you can’t take photos while you’re inside the building, so you’ll have to grab a few snaps outside with their three window displays. I learnt that the hard way when going to grab some festive fillers for the ‘gram and was told to delete and stop taking photos, oops. So there’s your heads up before you get a semi angry woman shouting at you. The outdoor exterior is very cute when it’s just about the get dark as the lights make it super festive.

Potions Cauldron, The Shambles

Harry Potter fans, like myself, will just LOVE this little emporium of wizardry. Filled with the best concoctions and surprises, you will be really disappointed if you didn’t travel down the Shambles to visit this little piece of magic. Okay, I might have gone a bit overboard with the puns but you get the picture. From bath potions to dragons eggs, this is a must visit for all our inner witches and wizards who’s childhood revolved around Harry, Hermione and Ron. The steam outside the shop makes it pretty hard to miss too! Go on, be a proper tourist this Christmas, even if you’re a resident like me!

Shambles Market, Parliament Street

Shambles Market is a top tourist attraction as it is nested next door to our famous Christmas market. So after your little wander around the festivities, take a detour down past Pret à Manger for some hidden food and drink treasures, there’s lots for everyone. It’s a brilliant shortcut to the Shambles too. York is great for little hacks like that, as stupid as it sounds, the streets and roads always lead to hideaways or act as shortcuts to main tourist hotspots. I would suggest blocking out an afternoon, or possibly a day, to explore the market and the Shambles together as it is a historic place in our city.
